It’s one of those places where people look at their photos afterwards and ask me what filter I used. No filter. Just Maspalomas at golden hour.
I’m Slavik, a photographer based in the south of Gran Canaria. I’ve been shooting at Maspalomas Beach since 2015 — couples, families, solo travellers, maternity, and everything in between. If you’re visiting the south of the island, this beach is one of the best locations I know for a photoshoot.
Why Maspalomas Beach Is One of My Favourite Locations to Shoot
Maspalomas sits at the very southern tip of Gran Canaria. It's where the dunes end, the lighthouse stands, and the Meloneras resort area begins. That combination of landmarks, natural textures, and ocean backdrop gives me options that very few locations can match.
Near the Faro de Maspalomas
The lighthouse — Faro de Maspalomas — has been here since 1890. It's calm, elegant, and gives photos a sense of place that's immediately recognisable. I often use it as an anchor point for wide shots, with the couple or family in the foreground and the tower rising behind them.
Where the Dunes Meet the Sea
At the eastern end of the beach, the Maspalomas Dunes spill almost to the water's edge. The textures here are extraordinary — pale sand, blue Atlantic, and that low evening light raking across the dunes. If you want dramatic, cinematic shots, this is where we go.
Along the Meloneras Promenade
The Meloneras seafront is quieter and more elegant than the main beach stretch. The promenade runs along the Atlantic with clean lines, natural stone, and very little tourist noise in the early morning or at dusk. For editorial-style portraits — clean, modern, strong — this area works beautifully.
The Best Time of Day for a Beach Photoshoot at Maspalomas
I always recommend golden hour — the last 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. At Maspalomas, that falls around 6:00–7:30pm in summer and 4:30–5:45pm in winter.
During that window, the light is warm, soft, and flattering. Harsh midday sun creates flat, squinting photos. Golden hour creates something completely different — depth, warmth, and that quality of light that makes you look like you hired a lighting crew.
Early morning is also excellent. Around 7:30–8:30am, the beach is almost empty, the light comes in low from the east, and the colours are cooler and softer. If you prefer a calm, unhurried session without other tourists in the background, early morning is worth considering.
What a Maspalomas Beach Photoshoot Looks Like
I don’t pose people. Or rather — I give you a starting point, then let things develop naturally.
We might walk along the shoreline, stop at the dunes, sit on the sand near the lighthouse. I’ll give you small directions — look out at the water, walk towards me, hold each other — but I’m mostly watching for the in-between moments. The laugh that breaks out unexpectedly. The look over the shoulder. The hand reaching out.
Those are the photos that end up framed on walls.
A typical session at Maspalomas runs 60 to 90 minutes. We can cover two or three spots within the area in that time — the beach, the dunes edge, and the lighthouse or promenade depending on the light. You’ll receive 80–120 edited images within 3–5 days, delivered through a private online gallery.
Who This Is For
Most of my Maspalomas beach sessions are for:
Couples on holiday — whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, a honeymoon, or just want proper photos together for once. The beach and the dunes give you something that genuinely looks like a magazine shoot.
Families — the beach is wide, flat, and easy to manage with kids. I know which spots avoid the crowds, and I’m patient with children. Some of my favourite photos have come from kids doing exactly what they weren’t supposed to be doing.
Solo travellers — if you’re here alone and want more than selfies at the lighthouse, a solo portrait session is one of the most memorable things you can do on a holiday. No awkwardness, just good photos of you in one of the most beautiful places in Europe.
Maternity — the beach at golden hour is a natural fit for maternity photography. Soft light, open space, room to move. I’ve shot many maternity sessions at Maspalomas and the results are consistently some of my most-loved work.
FAQ: Beach Photography at Maspalomas
Where exactly do we meet for a Maspalomas beach photoshoot?
I’ll send you a specific meeting point before the session — usually near the lighthouse or at a spot on the promenade depending on where we’re starting. It’s easy to reach by car or taxi from most resorts in the Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés area.
How far in advance should I book?
As early as you can, especially in peak season (November to February and July to August). I usually have openings with a week or two notice outside those months, but popular time slots fill up fast. The best approach is to book before you travel.
What should we wear for a beach photoshoot?
Light, comfortable clothing in natural tones — cream, white, pale blue, sandy colours — photograph well against the beach and dunes. Avoid busy patterns or very dark colours in direct sun. I always send styling notes before the session so you’re not guessing.

Is the beach busy during golden hour?
The main Maspalomas beach does have people at golden hour, but I know the quieter stretches that avoid crowds. Near the dunes and lighthouse end it’s much calmer. Early morning sessions avoid this entirely — the beach is almost empty before 8:30am.
How much does a beach photoshoot at Maspalomas cost?
Sessions start from €200 for a 60–90 minute shoot. That includes one photographer, on-location direction, and 80–120 fully edited images delivered within 3–5 days. You can find full pricing details on my prices page. Packages and pricing
Can we combine the beach with the dunes in one session?
Yes, and I often recommend it. The beach and the dune edge are minutes apart on foot. In a 90-minute session we can easily cover both, giving you variety in the backgrounds and lighting conditions within a single session.
Maspalomas Beach is the kind of place that earns its reputation. The dunes, the lighthouse, the Atlantic light — it all adds up to something genuinely beautiful, and photographs that look like they could be anywhere feel out of place here. They look like here, which is the whole point.
If you’re visiting Gran Canaria and would like to make the most of your time at Maspalomas, I’d love to be your photographer. Feel free to get in touch — we’ll find the perfect time and spot together.
See you soon in Gran Canaria. — Slavik
