Beyond the Dunes

Portrait photoshoots on Gran Canaria’s volcanic coast — black rock, blue water, real weather.

Plan your session

Portrait Photoshoot on the Volcanic Coast of Gran Canaria

Most people who plan a photoshoot in Gran Canaria picture one thing — the Maspalomas Dunes at sunset. Soft sand, warm gold light, easy walking.

The dunes are wonderful. I shoot there several times a week. But they're not the only option, and for some sessions they're not even the best one.

If you want something with more character, more weather, more contrast — the volcanic coast on the southern and western side of the island gives you a completely different kind of portrait. Black lava rock, crashing Atlantic waves, and salt spray catching the afternoon light. It's the side of Gran Canaria most visitors walk past on their way to the beach.

I'm Slavik, a photographer based in the south of Gran Canaria since 2015. This is a guide to portrait photoshoots on the rocky coast — what makes it work, where to shoot, and how to plan a session that's worth the salt in your hair.

Why the Rocky Coast Works So Well for Portraits

Black Lava Against Bright Colour

Gran Canaria’s southern and western shores are made of dark volcanic rock — old lava flows that cooled into uneven black platforms reaching into the Atlantic. Against that almost-black background, any colour pops. A blue dress reads bright and clean. White cotton looks luminous. Skin tones lift naturally without needing extra light.

It’s one of the most flattering backgrounds you can shoot a portrait against, and it’s free. The island made it.

The Atlantic Does Half the Work

On the dunes, the landscape is calm and quiet — everything is up to you and the light. On the rocks, the ocean is a second subject. Waves crash. Spray jumps. The wind moves your hair, your dress, the fabric of a skirt.

That movement is what makes coastal portraits feel alive. You don’t have to pose — you just have to react. I shoot in the gaps between waves and the photos look like something is happening, because something is.

Light You Can’t Fake in a Studio

Late afternoon on the western coast of Gran Canaria is one of my favourite light situations on the island. The sun drops behind you toward the Atlantic, the water turns deep navy, and the light skims sideways across the rocks. It’s directional, warm, and soft at the same time — the kind of light photographers in northern Europe wait six months for.

Even on overcast days, the coast works. Diffused light over black rock with white spray is dramatic and cinematic. There’s no bad weather for portraits here. Just different moods.

The Best Spots Along Gran Canaria’s Rocky Coastline

Costa Meloneras Lava Platforms

The stretch between the Meloneras lighthouse and Lopesan Costa Meloneras is one of the most accessible volcanic coast sections on the island. Flat lava platforms reach out into the water, with tide pools, small natural arches, and clean lines of black rock against blue sea.

It’s easy walking, close to the resort area, and works for clients who don’t want to drive somewhere remote. Great for couple, maternity, and solo portrait sessions.

South of Puerto de Mogán

The coast just south of Puerto de Mogán is wilder. Bigger rocks, taller cliffs above, more dramatic waves on a windy day. This is where you go when you want energy and movement — the kind of session where spray hits the camera and nobody minds.

Worth the short drive from the resort strip. About 25 minutes from Maspalomas.

Anfi del Mar and the Western Rocks

The rocks on either side of Anfi del Mar’s white-sand beach offer a clean contrast — turquoise water against black stone. Slightly more sheltered than Mogán, slightly more dramatic than Meloneras. A good middle option, and especially nice in the hour before sunset when the cliffs catch warm side-light.

How a Coastal Portrait Session Actually Runs

A typical coastal session runs 90 minutes to two hours. We agree on a meeting point — usually a parking area within a few minutes of the rocks — and walk out together.

I scout the spot before you arrive. By the time we start, I know where the light is sitting, which platforms are dry, where the spray is jumping, and where you can stand safely. You don’t need to plan anything. You just need to come ready to move.

We shoot in sequences. Soft static frames on the rocks first — sitting, leaning, looking out at the water. Then movement — walking, turning into the wind, reacting to the spray. If you’re comfortable, we step into the shallow water for a few minutes; if you’re not, we stay dry. Both work.

You’ll get 100+ fully edited images delivered through a private online gallery within 3 to 5 days. Sessions start at €200.

What to Wear on the Rocks

The volcanic coast is a colour stage. Pick clothes that contrast with black rock.

  • Strong solid colours work best — blue, white, red, cream, deep green. Patterns get lost against the texture of lava.
  • Bring something that moves. Flowing fabric, a long skirt, a loose shirt — the wind does half the styling.
  • Bring a second outfit. Most clients change once mid-session. A dressier look first, swimwear or something more casual after.
  • Skip white shoes. They scuff on the rock immediately. Barefoot looks better in photos anyway.
  • Bring a towel if there’s any chance you’ll step into the water.

If you’d like more outfit advice, I have a full outfit guide on the blog — same principles, applied to dunes, beach, and town settings.

When to Book — Light, Tides, and Season

The best light on the western and southern coast is the last 90 minutes before sunset. In winter (November–March) that means starting around 4:30pm. In summer (June–August) we usually start around 6:30pm and finish near 8:00pm.

Tides matter more on the rocks than on the beach. At high tide, some platforms disappear; at low tide, more rock is exposed and the spray patterns change. I check the tide chart before every session and plan the location and timing around it.

Gran Canaria has photography weather year-round — over 300 days of sunshine and warm Atlantic temperatures even in winter. The peak seasons for visitors are December–March and July–August. If you’re travelling during those windows, book a few weeks ahead.

If you’d like to talk through dates, locations, or what kind of session would suit your trip, feel free to send me a message on WhatsApp. We’ll plan it together.

FAQ: Portrait Photoshoots on Gran Canaria’s Coast

How much does a portrait photoshoot on the coast cost?

Sessions start at €200 for a 90-minute shoot at one location, with 100+ edited images delivered in 3 to 5 days. Longer sessions and multi-location days are available. You can see full pricing on my prices page.

Is it safe to shoot on the volcanic rocks?

Yes, with common sense. I know which platforms stay dry, where the spray reaches, and where to stand on a windy day. We avoid anywhere genuinely risky. Flat shoes or bare feet, and following my lead, is all it takes.

Will I get wet during the session?

Only if you want to. Some clients love the idea of stepping into shallow water for a few frames — others stay dry the whole time. We agree before we start, and either version produces strong images.

What’s the best time of year for a coastal photoshoot in Gran Canaria?

ear-round. Winter (November–March) gives you cooler temperatures and earlier sunsets. Summer brings warm water and long golden hours. The light works in every season — only the timing of the session shifts.

Can I do a coastal session and a dune session in the same day?

Yes. A combined session — rocky coast in the late afternoon and Maspalomas Dunes at sunset — is one of the most popular setups for solo travellers and couples on holiday. It produces two completely different sets of images from one evening.

How far in advance should I book?

Two to three weeks is usually enough outside peak season. For December–March and July–August, earlier is better — those months fill up fast.

If you’re visiting Gran Canaria and want a portrait session that feels like the island rather than a backdrop, the volcanic coast is worth the small detour off the resort strip. Black rock, Atlantic spray, and the last hour of light — that’s all the styling you really need.

Feel free to get in touch via WhatsApp or the contact page. We’ll pick the spot, the hour, and the mood together.

See you soon on the rocks. — Slavik
