A rose-ringed parakeet working through a mesquite tree upside down, which seems to be the only way they eat. They've gone from a handful of escaped pets to one of the more common sounds in Gran Canaria's parks.

Las Canteras beach, Las Palmas. In the middle of the day — small boats anchored just off the sand, the city stacked up right behind the beach. It's one of the few capital cities in the world where you can do this.

Hummingbird hawkmoth on plumbago. Gran Canaria has no real hummingbirds — but this moth fools almost everyone. It hovers at the plumbago exactly like one, wings a blur, feeding without ever landing.

The Charca de Maspalomas — a freshwater lagoon sitting right behind the dunes, with the mountains showing through the haze on a warm day. Most tourists walk straight past it on the way to the beach and never look back.

Sunset above the clouds, Gran Canaria highlands. Above 1,800 metres in the centre of the island, there are days when the clouds sit below you like a second sea. On a clear evening you can even make out Teide, on Tenerife, poking through in the distance.

Common waxbills feeding on grass seeds. A small flock of common waxbills working through the seed heads — red-masked, easy to miss if you're not looking down at the grass instead of out at the view.

A blackbird holding still just long enough, backlit through the leaves with that orange beak catching the light. You hear them more than you see them on this island — mostly in gardens, early morning.

Plumeria in full bloom — the kind of flower that smells better than it photographs, though this one came close. Pink fading to white at the centre of each petal.

A robber fly, sitting still for once — usually you only see them as a blur chasing something smaller mid-air. This one paused just long enough on a bare twig against backlit leaves.

Same parakeet, holding still for once. You can just make out the ring around its neck here — that's where the name comes from, though it's easier to hear these birds than to see the ring.
