You’ve put in the miles. The climbs, the coastal roads, the early mornings under the Canarian sun. But at the end of the week, all you have is a blurry screenshot from Strava and a selfie at the top of Roque Nublo.
You deserve better than that.
I’m Slavik — a photographer based in the Las Palmas of Gran Canaria since 2015. Over the years I’ve realised the island is one of the best places in Europe to shoot cycling photography. The light, the terrain, the variety — it’s genuinely hard to match.
Why Gran Canaria Is One of the Best Cycling Photography Locations in Europe
Professional cycling teams come here every winter from across Europe for a reason. The roads offer everything — steep mountain switchbacks, Atlantic coastal routes, long open valleys, volcanic terrain that looks like nothing else on the continent.
From a photography standpoint, that variety is everything.
The Mountain Climbs
The road up to Roque Nublo, the switchbacks towards Tejeda, the long grind to Pico de las Nieves — these routes give dramatic backdrops that change every few hundred metres. Rocky ridgelines, cloud shadow moving across the slopes, views stretching all the way to Tenerife on a clear day.
The Coastal Roads
The southern coastal road between Maspalomas and Puerto de Mogán runs right along the Atlantic. Early in the morning, before the traffic builds, this stretch catches the first golden light off the water. For motion shots — the rider in full flow, the ocean in the frame — it’s one of my favourite locations on the island.
The Dunes
Not many cyclists think of Maspalomas Dunes for photos. But the dunes are five minutes from the main resort area, and the landscape feels completely remote. For athlete portraits — strength, stillness, intensity — there’s nothing quite like it. I’ve shot there at 6:30am with hardly another person in sight.
What I Capture During a Cycling Photoshoot
Most sport photography falls into two categories: action shots that miss the feeling, or staged portraits that look stiff. What I try to do is something between the two.
A session with me typically includes:
Motion and speed — riding past at full effort, capturing the blur of the wheels, the lean into a corner, the sprint across a flat.
Climbing shots — the effort on a steep gradient tells a story that no flat photo can. The hands on the bars, the face under load, the bike flexing on the pedal stroke.
Athlete portraits — once we reach a strong viewpoint, I’ll take a few minutes for proper portraits. Standing with the bike, looking across the valley, or just catching a natural pause at the top. These are often the images that end up in sponsorship proposals.
Detail shots — the jersey, the shoes, the groupset. These matter more than most riders expect, especially for brand content.
I don’t work from a rigid shot list. We talk beforehand about what you need the images for — social media, a sponsorship deck, a personal portfolio — and I shoot with that goal in mind throughout.
Who Books a Cycling Photoshoot in Gran Canaria?
The range is wider than you might think.
Training camp groups — many cycling clubs travel to Gran Canaria from November to March. If you’re here with a team, we can plan a shoot around one of your rides and get the whole group properly documented.
Individual athletes and triathletes — riders who want a strong personal portfolio, better content for their social channels, or images for kit and sponsorship applications.
Cycling influencers and content creators — if your feed is your business, you need images that stand out. The island’s varied terrain means we can capture several completely different looks in a single session.
Sportswear and equipment brands — guaranteed weather, world-class terrain, and a photographer who knows the island’s best angles. Gran Canaria is a legitimate location for brand campaigns.
How a Cycling Photoshoot Works
We start with a conversation — what kind of riding you’re doing, where you’re based, and what the images are for. From there I suggest a route and a time. Golden hour in the south of the island falls around 6:15–7:15pm depending on the season, and that’s when the light is at its best.
On the day, I position myself at the key points while you ride. I’ll give you direction on speed and line when needed, but most of the session is you doing what you do. I’m there to capture it properly.
Sessions typically run 90 minutes to two hours. You’ll receive 80–120 edited images within 3–5 days, delivered through a private online gallery.
If you’re interested in shooting while on the island, the best time to get in touch is before you arrive. Popular slots during training camp season fill up quickly.
FAQ: Cycling Photography in Gran Canaria
Do I need to be a professional cyclist to book a photoshoot?
Not at all. Most of my cycling clients are passionate amateurs, training camp riders, or triathletes who want quality images of their sport. You don’t need a sponsor or a race career — just a bike and a love for riding.
Where do we shoot? Can I choose the route?
Yes. I know the island’s roads well, and I’m happy to suggest locations based on your goals — mountain climbs, coastal stretches, or a mix of both. If you’ve already discovered a favourite section during your stay, we can plan around that too.
What time of day is best for cycling photography in Gran Canaria?
Early morning and golden hour give the best results. In summer that’s around 7pm; in winter it’s closer to 5:30–6pm. We’ll set the session time based on the route and the light conditions for that day.
Can you shoot during an actual group training ride?
Yes. I can follow on a scooter or position myself at key points along the route. Group rides need a bit more planning — get in touch before your trip and we’ll work out the logistics.
How much does a cycling photoshoot in Gran Canaria cost?
Sessions start from €200 for a 90-minute shoot. Group shoots and multi-location sessions are priced individually. Feel free to contact me—I’m happy to discuss what works for your plans and budget.
How do I receive my photos after the shoot?
All edited images are delivered through a private online gallery within 3–5 days of the session. You can download everything in full resolution and share directly from the gallery.
Cycling in Gran Canaria already feels like something out of a magazine spread. The roads, the light, the terrain — if you’re here, it’s worth capturing properly.
If you’d like to plan a shoot around your time on the island, feel free to get in touch. We’ll sort the route, the timing, and everything else together.
See you on the road. — Slavik
